Narrenturm - Culture - Vienna

This museum is housed at the Narrenturm (“madhouse tower”), Vienna’s first psychiatric hospital, built in 1784 at the request of Emperor Josef II. The city’s mentally ill were housed in the building until it eventually became a residence for doctors and nurses (lucky them!) with laboratories and workshops in 1866.

It has been the Federal Pathologic-Anatomical Museum since 1971 run by the University of Vienna.Quote_transparent

Morbid Moments - Vienna

Morbid Moments Wien stirbt anders

At the turn of the 20th century, the delight in the strength of the electricity was so great that its potential danger was not blown to the wind. Naturally this led to casualties, mainly for the new profession of electrical workers. A physician, Stefan Jellinek, refused to accept this. Jellinek researched accident sites, documenting and collecting material until he received the first professorship in Electropathology in 1929. After his forced emigration to Oxford in 1937 and multi-decade long odyssey with the collection, it was transferred to the Technical Museum in 2002. Because the wet specimens are presently located in the Pathology-Anatomy Museum in the Narrenturm, special tours are offered there. Useful side note: Contrary to general belief, it is possible to bring people back to life after an electrical accident.
