For a quick shopping pitstop in the first district, visit the Trzesniewski buffet off of the Graben. Their little open-faced sandwiches are available with 22 different kinds of toppings and egg-based spreads, from herring-onion to cucumber-egg. 18 of these spreads have been on their menu since 1902. The most popular is supposedly ham with egg but they are all very delicious.

These must be washed down with a Pfiff, a quarter liter of beer, the perfect amount served in mini mugs. But don’t think of pinching the glasses as souvenirs—the waiters will chase you down the street. Though Trzesniewski now has eight other locations, do go to the original buffet at Dorotheergasse that has retained its Art Deco features from the interwar period. Ooh, those gorgeous sconces!

We know you’ve been dying to ask. It’s pronounced “tschez-nyev-ski”. The R is silent.Quote_transparent
