In Vienna’s multicultural Brunnenmarkt is a legendary all-day breakfast institution frequented by all walks of life. From the outside, Kent looks like small greasy kebab joint catering solely to the Turkish community. But come a little closer and discover a sprawling, welcoming restaurant with a huge garden—the fountain and chestnut trees create a perfect brunching environment. Supposedly the largest Turkish restaurant in Austria, Kent boasts a colorful cross-section of Vienna’s inhabitants. DJs and party people come pre-(or post-) clubbing, bourgeois families entertain their extended clan with “exotic” fare, students fill up on cheap Mediterranean food and, of course, market vendors dine on the grub after a long day’s work.
The famous “Kent Breakfast” consists of sigara börek, raw vegetables, eggs, three kinds of cheese, olives, honey and butter. The kebabs are reputedly some of Vienna’s best and every dish comes with an unlimited supply of Turkish bread. Sophisticated it is not, but neither vegetarians nor meat eaters will leave hungry.
