After German architecht Gottfried Semper left his mark with the creation of the Dresden Hoftheater(twice), he toured to Vienna to bestow similar buildings of graduer, the Burgtheatre, and the lesser known Semperdepot.
Initially desiged as a scenery depot for the Federal Theatres, it was revitalised in 1996, and now houses an atelier space for the oldest academy in central europe, (according to akademie history) the Acadeny of Fine Arts, Vienna.
Like a true chamellion, the Semperdepot has seen various transformations since its birth in 1877. The most noteable pop cultural reference being when ‘robbiemania’ (aka Robbie Williams) hit town for the filiming of his ‘Lovelight’ video in the large central room.
Locked behind closed doors is an unsual and eeries space: a web of interconnecting doors and hallways, and as one theory has it, even ‘doors to another world’. Spook stories aside, the large auditorium (think high ceiling, marble pillars, winding
stairwells) of the Semperdepot forms an ideal space for the creative community, with its next reincarnation taking place for the Fashion 9 Festival.
