The oldest active theater in the city, established in 1788 and affectionately referred to as just ‘Der Josefstadt,’ has literally hosted the likes of Beethoven, Wagner and the elder Strauss.
These days its focus is on theater, and regularly performing local classics such as George Tabori’s farcical Mein Kampf and Arthur Schnitzler’s Reigen, alongside less artistically successful literary adaptations, like their butchering of Thomas Mann’s genealogically epic Buddenbrooks.
