In September 1922 the Akademietheater located in the Lisztstraße became an affiliate partner of the Burgtheater. The program, which had been dominated by classical works, then also included contemporary Austrian and international authors.

In 1938 the political changes also affected the theater. The management was exchanged and more and more artists had to emigrate. During the last days of the war the building on the Ring was severely damaged by bombings and a fire of obscure origin.
