Cafes are a dime a dozen in Vienna, but Cafe Drechsler stands out. Open 23 hours daily, Drechsler serves traditional Viennese cuisine and assortment of coffees with a prolification similar to 24-7 diners. With its central location facing the Naschmarkt on Wienzeile, Drechsler attracts a diverse crowd of night clubbers, market stallholders and yuppie families.
Due to its early bird hours, Drechsler was the favored locale by party kids looking for some pre-dawn gulasch to soak up the alcohol. Old Mr. Drechsler would serve the menu himself, albeit very slowly in his later years.
Eventually the cafe experienced a rebirth—closed for several years for renovation, Drechsler reemerged with a sleek new design by British architect Sir Terence Conran, replacing its gray interior and languid 24-hour functionality with sleek marble countertops and clean white walls. Admire your new surroundings while munching on one of Drechsler’s fine desserts, salads (chicken schnitzel and potato salad is a must) or go for the old favorite—the gulasch.
