Who’s watching the watchmen? Don’t worry, this recommended event isn’t about the screen adaption of Alan Moores’s graphic novel. It’s this year’s Big Brother Awards. First awarded ten years ago in the UK, it is now an annual (dis-)honor to government agencies, private companies and individuals who have excelled in the violation of our privacy. Every year the privacy of people everywhere is increasingly violated while enormous amounts of personal data are collected, stored and processed – often illegally – in the pursuit of more efficient marketing, greater social control, and more powerful mechanisms for monitoring of the citizen. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
