Ridley Scott’s futuristic film, Blade Runner (1982), is the ultimate example of the curated series it is included in, Design Dystopias. In 2019, humans have genetically engineered “replicants,” which are essentially humans who are designed for labor and entertainment purposes. Illegal on earth, the robots live in colonies in outer-space, and if ever found on land they are hunted down and killed.
Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is a blade runner, or a hunter of replicants, who must seek out a group of replicants who have traveled to Los Angeles in search of a way to extend their lifespan. Although he hunts them to the end, the replicants ultimately end up teaching the detached Deckard important truths of humanity.
