<description_plain>Konditorei Oberlaa—the tuned-in pastry cafes strewn throughout the city—counts over 150 sweet delicacies on display and ready to eat. The Naschmarkt location is the sleekest, catering to "bourgeois bohémien" shoppers while, in the old town, the elegant Konditorei lies on the historic Neue Markt.

The revered Café Dommayer founded 1787 in Hietzing was recently acquired, but have no fear, the pianist and violinist still entertain patrons on weekends. We recommend taking a "curative" soak in the thermal mineral spa when visiting the original Kurkonditorei (roughly, "spa pastry shop") at Therme Oberlaa.

More importantly, Oberlaa's mind-blowingly delicious cakes and chocolates is what has us coming back for more. The mousse au chocolat torte is among the finest on the planet, while the signature Oberlaa Kurtorte, walnut sponge cake layered with chocolate mousse and nougat, cures all our sweet tooth ills.</description_plain>

<description_plain>This small cafe, fashioned in the tradition of northern Italian espresso bars, serves the best tramezzini in town. No contest. Van Veinsten's antipasti are equally authentic and many of its fine wines fall into the "exceptional" category. And its espressi are aromatic enough to transport you to an Italian piazza.

Situated on the romantic Franziskanerplatz, the pleasant and warm decor—deep burgundy leather couches, wooden benches, rice paper lamp fixtures and wine bottles stacked in racks—is inviting even during the winter when most places seem drab.</description_plain>

<description_plain>On a quiet cobblestone street in the 8th district near the baroque Piaristen church is a charming creperie that could have been teleported from the south-of-France. Enjoy the most authentic-tasting French crepes in Josefstadt's romantic Provence complete with terracotta walls, mismatched old chairs and a shiny Faema espresso machine .

Most impressive is that all ingredients used here are organic. And instead of milk and wheat flour, the crepes are made with soy products, spelt and buckwheat: 21 savory galettes (capers and cheese!), and 16 sweet crepes or waffles (chestnut cream filling!) you can top off with Grand Marnier, oohlala!

There are organic beers, wines and an abundance of loose teas you can drink while browsing through the books of Bibliothek der Provinz who host regular readings at the cafe.

Listen to the church bells ringing during Sunday brunch on a sidewalk table. We're as charmed as you shall be.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Cafe Korb may look no different among the sea of traditional cafes in the First District, but then you go downstairs to the basement, where—surprise!—a vintage-style gentleman's bowling alley and a fantastically modern toilet await. The latter is known as the Artlounge, and was designed by Günter Brus, Peter Kogler, Manfred Wolff-Plottegg and Peter Weibel.

The unique twist to the cafe makes Korb a favored locale by the Viennese gliteratti—due, in part, by its famous owner Susanne Widl, who some might remember as a famous actress, model and performance artist from the '60s. Austrian Nobel Lauereate Elfriede Jelinek, among others, frequent Korb for its delicious pastries and its retro charm.</description_plain>

<description_plain>This retro Ringstrasse café may take its inspiration from the '50s but it was actually founded in 1903. Located directly opposite the city park and the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), the classy cafe has always remained true to its homespun tradition: Viennese cuisine, homemade cakes and pastries, a good selection of international newspapers, the glass of water with your coffee, the tinkling piano music in the background (Monday, Wednesday and Friday 19-22) and the garden that can be enjoyed in the summer months.

Check out the cafe's new back room, recently restored to its original Art Nouveau style.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Bräunerhof is the kind of cafe where you feel you have finally arrived. The kind of place with original furnishings and fixtures from the 1920s, mirrored walls and modernist interior that make you feel at home. And it has the largest selection of international newspapers in the city.

But it can also make you feel unwelcome. It's equipped with the legendary gruffness of Viennese coffeehouse waiters—though only a glimpse of their ironic humor may help you arrive to the conclusion that you actually kind of like it.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Whole books have been written at and about this prototype of a classic, smoky cafe, that represents one of the last great Central European traditions of writer and artist coffeehouses as exemplified in Vienna by Café Central before the First World War and Café Herrenhof before the Second.

The interior decoration, done by a pupil of the renowned Jugendstil architect Adolf Loos, has remained untouched and the cafe is still run by Leopold Hawelka and his family.

Trust generations of Viennese artists and try Miss Hawelka's legendary buchteln!</description_plain>

<description_plain>Kunsthallencafe is a central meeting point for young creatives and unbuttoned business folks alike. Located in Karlsplatz, it's in short walking distance of major cultural hubs and shopping areas including The Graben and 1st District, Mariahilferstrasse, Naschmarkt, Museumsquarter and Schleifmuhlgasse.

Sharing the same building as the Kunsthalle Art Project Space, the cafe enjoys a great outdoor terrace which hosts DJs during the summertime. They offer a standard Austro-Continental menu as well as some local specialties that changes weekly. Don't miss the generously sized and well-garnished hamburgers.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Owned by Austrian actor Hanno Poschl, Kleines Cafe is a regular hang out spot for actors and others in the Industry. Designed by the architect Hermann Czech, a scene from the film Before Sunrise was shot here.

The menu is light including breakfast, sandwiches, antipasti and salads. The Baueromelette ("farmers omelette" with bacon, cheese, onions) and salad nicoise are highly recommended.

During the daytime it's more of a family crowd but at night it hosts a more colorful scene of characters. Come to sit outside in the summertime, right in the middle of the picturesque Fransziskanerplatz square, in an obscure and hidden part of the 1st district—it feels like a Roman Holiday.</description_plain>
