First day of the blk/river festival and the first outdoor-projects started with the infamous State of Sabotage.
Brainchild of artist Robert Jelinek, SoS first started as a project in 1992 and begun operating as an international music and art label in 1994.
In 2003 during the Micronations festival on the unhabited Finnish island of Harakka just off of Helsinki, Sabotage declared itself a state in 2003 and changed its name to “SoS – State of Sabotage.”
It was one of those days, where you realize, that we won’t have a proper fall season this year in Vienna. Only a few days ago it was bright and sunny and now we were freezin our asses of in front of the U4 subway station where we should supposed to meet the rest of the team.
Half an hour later we met with State of Sabotage mastermind Robert Jelinke at an old foundry somewhere in the 23rd Viennese district. Short, friendly introduction and then we wittnessed the unwrapping of the old mortuary van, that is now the SoS mobile.
Think of a really Viennese kind of Batcave/Batmobile scenery.
So we drove with this monster of a van to a place called toter Grund, a nudist area during the summer – now our playground, packing 160 liter of concrete, two spades and one of the customized State of Sabotage manhole covers, to create the SoS GATE – TERRITORIAL PHANTOM 02.
Jelinek uses this manhole covers as a state border shift, a new demarcation for the State of Sabotage, if you will, a a transnational entrance on national territory.
The State can be eveywhere, this time it was an somewhat hidden ground on the Donauinsel in Vienna, next time it might be somewhere else, where you at least expect it.
The days of of state-regulated land ownership are counted. Deal with it.
